Junior 15-18 group hits the highway

2017 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #5 / Enterprise South Trails - Chattanooga, TN

We don't even want to comment on the weather forecast but let's just say it was wrong. The trails did get some overnight rain but it only helped, when the day broke over the park and all throughout the rest of the afternoon it was mild and dry and conditions could not have been better. The 8.25 mile Sorba Chattanoonga club maintained trail was routed a little different for the race and started out on about a mile of uphill pavement and then finshed on about a half mile of paved decending to the finish and all of the single track trail inbetween was fast and furious, the most common heard term was "it feels like it is all downhill", followed by a grin.

The race action was super close in most classes with many finishes coming down to a wheels length at the end. One of the closest was in the 19-39 cat 1 men's class as Harrison Klapheke and Justin McMurrrer diced it out with Harrison pulling out the win. The women's cat 1 winner was Kayla Hammel.  Many thanks to the park staff and to the round sponsor the Trek Store Chattanoonga.

Juniors take on Oak Mountain

2017 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #6 / Bump N Grind 23 / Oak Mountain State Park Trails - Birmingham, Al

For the second year in a row the Bump N Grind classic has combined with the SERC series and the partenership is proving to be a success with big turnouts in the junior and kids races especially. This year the weather was a factor for many of the racers but luckly not the first wave of racers that hit the 9 and 5 mile loops that were used during the 9am wave, their conditions were perfect, no mud and overcast. The 11am wave was another story as these racers faced either a 21 mile or a 29 mile option and the rain started just as the riders were leaving the line, needless to say they didn't look the same when they returned from the trail as the skies opened up and made for wet but not muddy conditions.

Taking the men's pro class win was Ryan Woodall and Joseyln Guiterrez was the winner of the women's top spot. Many thanks to the Bump organization and to all of the fine sponsors of the event and series.

The 12 Hours of Tsali train leaves the station

2017 12 Hours of Tsali - Tsali Trails, Bryson City, NC

This years race was a story of two trails, one a good one and well let's just say one a little wet, ok really wet! The weekend started out with a lot of concern for the weather but as day broke over the hills of Western NC it looked like we may get a break, the trails were typical Tsali, good shape with the occational puddle and new this year was the use of the Thomson Trails. Thats the way it was until about noon when the skies opened up and laid down a healthy amount of h2o on the 7.9 mile course and then of course the sun came out like nothing had happened. The result was the 3 hour racers had a pretty good race and everyone else was facing the dreaded "M-word", mud, but hey at least it wasn't cold!

Jered Kelly was the top 12 hour solo male and Rebecca Hicks won the female 12 hour solo and an impressive 5th overall. The fastest team of the day was the two person team of Nick Bragg and Scott Rusinko as they logged 18 laps. The top four person Sport team was Rapid Thigh Movement, while Dirt Digglers won the Base level competition and team 2 fast for you came out on top of the Junior category. In the 3 hour class it was Caleb Baity and Grace Ragland who were declaired the winners and Chad Brandon topped the 6 hour solo class.

All in all there were lot's of smiles under the mud, many thanks to the Nantahala Area Sorba club and the Swain County Rescue Squad that helped with the event and also thanks to all of the fine sponsors of the event and especially to Bryson City Bicycles who provided the bulk of the prizes for the awardees.

Vinny Silva logs another lap at Markham

2016 Specialized Florida State Championship series #6 / Coconut cup #1 - 11-6-16 - Markham Park Trails - Sunrise, Fl

A super weekend for racing in South Florida, the mild temperatures and of course just enough rain to pack the trails in plus a ton of competitors made it so.  This also marked the first time this season that the two series came together on the same weekend and the next time will be Alva later this month. The Markham park trail crew always does a great job with the preparation of course and the layout and this event was no exception as they creatively combined a number of different trails to end up with a 6.8 mile challenging loop.  Even the kids course is unique at this park as it has a lot of distance and variety.  About 85 racers lined up on Saturday for the Coconut cup short track bonus and it was Bob McCarty taking a close win over Bala Alamedia in the yellow wave group while Andrew Slocombe won in the white wave heat.

This course is one of the most demanding and technial on the circuit and it was no suprise that racers that ride the Markham course a lot did very well.  Bob McCarty pulled away early in the race to take another win and now holds a commanding lead in the Men's Elite points standings.  Carolyn Maddox was back on top of the standings as well as she won the Women's expert class.

The Protano Law Holeshot $50 award went to Bala Alamedia.

Many thanks to all of the fine sponsors!

Dustin Greer leads early in the Short Track at Helen

2016 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #9 / GSC #6 - Unicoi State Park Trails - Helen, GA 7-23/24-16

A perfect ending for both series as the SERC and the GSC finals were held in Helen, Ga at on of the most famous trails in the country (site of the NORBA nationals back in the mid ninties).  The very demanding course features 8.5 miles of climbs and decents and has very little flat ground to speak of and of course the cold creek crossing.  A rain on Saturday afternoon had the riders wondering about the trail condtions but by race on Sunday the course was in good shape and only had a few wet spots in the low lying areas.

On Saturday the SERC bonus short track took place featured some fast action with several different lead changes in both the white and yellow waves but in the end it was Sean Hulse winning the 10min plus one lap white wave and Chris Lessing taking the win in the 15 min plus one lap yellow wave.

Sunday the race day kicked off with the kids races on the same course as the previous days short track and includes a tough grassy climb each lap and then at 9:30 am the yellow wave hit the legendary XC course and the top riders faced 3 laps and around 1000 ft of climbing per lap.  In the end the top male racer was Diego Vasquez Vargas and the top female with a perfect sweep of both the SERC and GSC series was Kayley Burdine.

The Protano Law $50 holeshot belonged to Jason Bewley for his fast start in the 40-49 cat 1 class.  After the racing on Sunday the attention turned to the series Banquet hall as nearly 150 attendies filled the Unicoi State Park lodge for a delicious buffet and plenty of bench racing about the season.  Besides the champions crowned and all of the prizes and awards to the top three in each class there were special awards for the most improved rider (MIR), most improved Junior, rider of the year (ROY) male and female and sportsmanship.  Dustin Greer and Kayley Burdine took the honors as riders of the year male and female respectively, Garrison Minter won MIR as the GSC Junior, Alex Esteban was MIR Junior in the SERC while Pete Edminson and Chris Lessing were the MIR for the SERC and GSC respectively.  JJ Swain (SERC) and Bobby Fishbough (GSC) were given the sportsmanship awards, congrats to all!
