Mike McQuillin was on a roll at Alafia FSC

2017 Specialized Florida State Championship series #3 - Alafia River State Park - Lithia, Fl

I think summer forgot to look at the calendar, it is October in Florida and it was a hot one at Alafia. Normally the weather is perfect this time of year in Florida, you know, low humidity, mild and sunny, this race felt like mid July but at least it didn't rain and in fact the trails were in great shape (many thanks to all of the nearly 200 volunteers after Irma that helped get Alafia back online). The course was set up with many of the new reroutes in the trails system and was just a little under 7 miles clocking in at 6.8 officially. Fun was the most common word heard throughout the day concerning the track, yes it was fun with lot's of up's and down's and banked turns throughout.

In the racing action there was lot's of new winners this week and that includes the men's Elite class with Daniel Hidalgo taking the win on this day despite dropping his chain on the start and coming from dead last to first in the four lap affair. Also in the women's expert class Alaina Casioppo won her first race of the season. Bob McCarty and Carolyn Maddox will continue to hold on to the leaders jersey's in there respective class however. Mark Singleton took the Protano Law $50 holeshot award this week in the 50+ expert class and Team Bent's Dirt Dominators are on top of the team championship standings with a slim 3 point lead. Many thanks to AJ's Bikes and Boards for handling the round sponsorship and handing out lot's of great prizes to the winners!

James Farr pulls the holeshot at Altoona Creek GSC

2017 Georgia State Championship series #4 - Altoona Creek Trails, Acworth, Ga

The series made it's first stop ever at this North Atlanta area trail system and from all accounts it was a hit. With many trails to choose from the race loop utilized a 7.5 section that had a wide start area, lot's of fun single track and just enough climbing to get the heart rate up. Many thanks to the volunteers at SORBA West Georgia for having the course in good shape and for helping during the event.

Saturday the race action was on a special short 1.5 mile short track loop which was a bonus point race for the GSC racers, the first wave to leave was the advanced yellow wave racers and they definately put on a show and it was Dustin White who took a narrow win in that group. The white wave saw a new leader every lap it seemed and it was Ben Hill who claimed the victory.

Sunday contained a lot of close racing as well and Shawn Smith walked away with bragging rights as the fastest male rider of the day while Lorretta Simpson was the top female.

The 19-39 Cat 2's battle for the holeshot at Conyers

2017 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #3 / Georgia State Championship series #2 / GHIP Trails - Conyers, GA

Hard to believe but the weather was awesome at Conyers, there seems to be something about this location everytime the series comes to this famous trail system, normally it is cold and windy and many times wet but not this time!  Temps were cool in the morning then warmed up to a very nice 70 degress by middle of the day and despite a nasty storm that blew through the area earlier in the week the trails were in great shape.  The course was 7 miles in length and included a new single track section along with the big dip section at the end of the loop.

Racing has been competitve this season and this round was no exception, the top pro male racer on the day was the same as last year's winner, Alex Meucci and Madison McDaniel walked away with the win in the women's expert/ pro class.

Many thanks to all of the sponsors and special thanks to C-Town Bicycles of Conyers as they provided the swag for the medalists and also to Truckerco.com, Connex chains and Creative Concepts for providing the holeshot awards.

The next SERC / GSC race will be in Winder, Ga on April 29 & 30th.

GM 50+ experts baved the cold and wet of Macon

2017 Georgia State Championship series #1 - LH Thomson Trails, Macon, Ga

The opening round of the GSC started out as a great weekend, the sun was out the temps were in the 70's and the trail was in super shape but that was on Saturday and although the time trial was held in those optimum conditions the race on Sunday was another story.

A cold wet day faced the racers on Sunday morning the temperatures never made it out of the 40's all day and with the rain and wind it was a show of bravery just to line up but the trail however was in good shape, in fact local knowledge says it may be the best rain course in the central Georgia area and I believe it.  Many thanks to the OMBA club (Olkmulgee Mountain Bike Association) for all of their efforts in not only prepping the race course and marking it but marshaling the event as well, oh yes and thanks very much for the fire pit, wow what a life saver!

Dustin White won the very competitive 19-39 expert class while Mose Howard from the 40-49 class was the overall winner.  Mary Gilmer took home the top women's honors.  Saturdays time trial was won by Mose Howard as well and Stephanie Wilmert was the top female.  Next GSC will be in Conyers on April 9th.

The Base 30-39 guys celebrate at Quiet Waters CC

2017 Coconut Cup #5 - 1-29-17 - Quiet Water Park Trails - Deerfield Bch, Fl

Well Saturday was great weather, unfortunately the race was Sunday and the series return to the park after more than a decade (due to hurricane damage in 2005) was dampened a little by an unusual cold front that brought cold wet conditions to the racers that braved the elements.  On the bright side it was proably the best course to ride in the rain and the turnout was suprisingly good considering the weather.

The 6.9 mile course was a challenge as the route twists and turns through ancient coral beds and has a number of man made features to spice things up a bit as well.  Many thanks to Bike America for sponsoring the event and to all of the dedicated volunteers that not only preped the course but worked all day in the rain to help keep the riders safe and on track.  Bala Almeida took a strong win in the expert 19-39 class while Erica Zaboor was the women's winner.
