The two person teams champs at 12 Hours of Santos

2017 12 Hours of Santos - Vortex Trails - Ocala, Fl

The weather was the subject on the minds of most at this years event as the forcast had not been good for about a week out but fortunately luck was on our side as mild temperatures and at least two near misses with heavy rain.  It did manage to rain during the awards but everyone seemed not to care at that point, we had dodged a bullet.  The 9 mile course was in great shape for most of the day with a little slickness later on.  The layout was certainly creative, many thanks to Ron Henion for putting together a fun and challenging trail!

The turnout was amazing despite the weather forcasts with just over 400 racers hitting the popular trail system at 10am sharp with a running start and a mad dash to be the first into the single track.  At the end of the day the top 12 hour solo racers were Andrew Hilling and Kristy Cole while the top team was WCC Avengers.  Charlie Mullins was the top 3 hour male winner and Madison McDaniel took the female honors, top 6 hour racers were Ryan Woodall and Beata Wronska.  Many thanks to all of the sponsors and the OMBA club for building and maintaining the trails!

Andre Wedderburn all smiles at Markham

2017 Coconut Cup #7 - Markham Park Trails - Sunrise, Fl

The final round of the series was met with great conditions except for the wind, with gusts up to 35 mph everyone was holding on to their hats (and tents) but once out on the trail things seemed pretty normal. The Markham park trail crew once again had the trails in ripping good shape and also provided the course marshaling during the event.

Bob McCarty took the overall win in the men's elite class and Jennifer Moos was the women's top rider on the day.

Since the last race can't be dropped there was some added pressure on some of the classes and things like mechanical problems can be costly but despite breaking a chain on the opening lap Eric Santana still came out the champ in the xc-2 40-49 class and also was awarded MIR (most improved rider) for the series. Another close race was the Clydesdale sport class with Robert Duncanson and Todd Guinn ending up in a tie on points with Todd getting the nod due the "best last" finish. The sportsmanship award was given to Tonya Johnson. Congrats to all!

Madison McDaniel lead early at Helen.

2017 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #7 / Georgia State Championship series #5 / Unicoi Trails - Helen, GA

Great finish to two great series! The epic former national course in Helen, Ga was the place it happened, the trail is one of the toughest in the region with it's 8.5 mile loop that is filled with steep and long climbs, it is a test of who is ready for the championship. The course was perhaps in the best shape it has been in years as recent rains gave the area a break for the weekend and traction was at it's highest.

Race action started on Saturday as the SERC short track took place and racers from both waves hit the short but very demanding loop which included the dreaded finish line hill, the yellow wave racers hit the loop 9 times and saw many lead changes before Harrison Klapheke finally took the win in the 15 minutes plus one lap. The white wave ST was won by local Elliot Caldwell and was 10 minutes plus on lap and a total of 6 laps.

The cross country on Sunday was filled with some close racing in many of the categories and two series titles were up for grabs in this non drop race. Dustin White came out on top in the men's fastest class and Madison McDaniel took the win in a competitive field.

The series banquet was held that afternoon at the Unicoi lodge just above the race site as thousands of dollars worth of prizes and awards were handed out the racers along with special awards which included...

SERC:

Most Improved Rider (MIR): Chris Lessing

Most Improved Junior: Joshua Dumford

Sportsmanship: Arron Pitts

GSC:

Most Improved Rider: James Farr

Sportsmanship: Mark Singleton

Hammer Head 25 milers winding up

2017 Hammer Head 100 - 4-23-17- Greenway Trails - Ocala, Fl

Near perfect weekend for the annual endurance race, mild weather a great turnout and although the trail has been dry we did get a fair amount of rain overnight that made the trail much more tolerable.  The race features a 25 mile loop that goes West of I-75 and includes trails like "Nales" and "Ern N Burn" with a few sections of limestone double track to either rest on or go faster, your choice.

The fifty and one hundred mile riders hit the trail first at 8am followed by the 25 mile group that started at 8:30am both with a 1.5 mile moto paced run up the limestone road to the Landbridge.  First in the woods was the lead group that included eventual winners Doug Deweese (100 mile solo), Julio Gomez (50 mile solo) and John Murray (45+ solo) along with Mose Howard who with his wife Jennifer Howard won the Co-Ed team and also in the group was the 100 mile 2 person team winners Dwayne and Michelle Algire.  Amy Horstmeyer took the top honors in the female 50 class.  In the 25 mile group Matt Nalesnik took the win while Madison McDaniel was named top female of the 25 milers.  Many thanks to all of the sponsors and volunteers!

Woodall and Horstmeyer strike first at SERC opener

2017 South Eastern Regional Championship series #1 / Florida Cup - Haile's Trails - Newberry, Fl

The opening shots were fired in the 18th annual SERC series in it's traditional first round location of Haile's trails and It was Ryan Woodall and Amy Horstmeyer taking the wins in the men's and women's pro fields respectively.  With the weather and the trails treating the riders well there was only one thing left to determine and that was the finishing order as the many competitive races unfolded.  The 6 mile course featured a number of steep climbs (no suprise for this course) and some fast downhills as a reward as many consider this to be the most demanding trail in Florida and a perfect host for a regional and Florida Cup state level mountain bike race.

Many thanks to all of the series sponsors and especially to Goodbike bike shop of Gainesville for providing thousands of dollars worth of prizes for the athletes. In each of the classes the top Florida rider was presented with a special Florida Cup trophy and claim to the one day state title for that particular class, congrats to all!  The next round of the SERC series is in Bryson City, NC at the famous Tsali Trails.
