Invasion of the Juniors at Ft Yargo SERC / GSC

2016 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #4 / KHS Georgia State Championship series #3 - Ft Yargo Trails - Winder, GA 5-1-16

Despite the threat of rain, the sun came out and the trails were in good shape although a little slick early in the day due to the overnight rains.  The combined series of the SERC & GSC bring out the best in competition and this event was no different as many classes saw some very close finishes.

Bradford Perley finished ahead of all of the pro/elite men and Kayley Burdine continued to dominate in the women's top class and continues to hold the yellow leaders jersey while a new men's leader was placed on Dustin Greer.   Many thanks to all of the sponsors including Specialized, KHS and Samson bikes (sponsor of the junior GSC classes).

Next SERC event is in Clemson on 5-15-16 and it is also a GSC makeup race.

Dwyane Algire floats on rocks at SERC 1

2016 Specialized South Eastern Regional Championship series #1 - Haile's Trails - Newberry,  Fl 3-20-16

The trails could not have been in better shape and the temperatures were great as well but that is not what the weather folks kept saying as dire forecasts from the all knowing internet and TV kept many away from what turned out to be a perfect mountain bike race weekend.

The course was orginially planned to be 6.5 miles with a couple of new climbs added in but the heavy rains on Thurday had the course cut down to 5.1 miles to anticipate even more rain in the forecast (which didn't happen) but what was left was still a major challenge to the racers as there is no such thing as an easy layout at this trail system.  The direction was clockwise which meant the steep hills came early in the lap and had the heart rates soaring by the first mile.  The racing action was highlighted by Florida's Ryan Woodall winning the men's pro / elite class while Alabama's Kayley Burdine won the women's top category both will be featured at round two with the newly minted Leaders jerseys as they will be the series points leaders respectively.  Tsali North Carlolina will be the next stop on the series and will include a Individual Time Trial on Saturday with the Cross country race on Sunday April 2nd & 3rd.

Many thanks again to all of the sponsors and to the brave racers that came out despite the poor weather predicitions.

USA Cycling & Gone Riding sanction again!

January 27, 2016 -- Gone Riding race promotions has announced that its four cross-country mountain bike series, which consist of 32 events across the southeast, will again sanction with USA Cycling in 2016.

The South Eastern Regional Mountain Bike Championship Series, Georgia State Mountain Bike Championship Series, Florida State Mountain Bike Championship Series, and South Florida Coconut Cup Mountain Bike Series offer ample off-road racing opportunities to cycling enthusiasts across the southeast. Now, as USA Cycling-sanctioned events, these 32 races will also offer riders the added benefits of being included in the nation’s only bike racing results and rankings program, as well as accident medical insurance for incidents that may occur during an athlete’s involvement in the sanctioned event.

“Gone Riding has a long history with USA Cycling that goes back to the early 1990’s,” said Gone Riding President and Race Director David Berger. “Due to positive changes at USA Cycling, we’re happy to announce that for no additional cost, we’ll once again provide our racers with the benefits of USA Cycling.”

Some of USA Cycling’s goals in 2016 are to lower the barriers of entry to the sport of cycling, and to increase its support of amateur and grassroots racing. For mountain bike races, this means a $5 rebate on one-day licenses to the race director, the elimination of permitting fees, and the elimination of one-day licenses for practice days.

Ed Lis took home a championship & the Sportsmanship award at Coconut cup final

2016 Coconut Cup South Florida Series #7 - Halpatiokee Trails- Stuart,  Fl 3-13-16.

What a perfect ending to this years series, it was a tough start with the wet weather that seemed to be following the first half of the Coconut cup but the last 4 races were dry and the courses were awesome thanks to all of the many volunteers.that keep our precious trails in great shape.

The racing action took place on the 7.5 mile relatively flat course but does have a few short climbs and technical sections that feature palmetto roots that demand the utmost attention from the rider especially at speed.  It was Tim Zimmerman again claiming the top spot amongst the men racers and Simone Berger topped the women's field as well.  The season ending awards presentation took place at the park imediately following the event as the champions were served up some great prizes along with plaques and jerseys.  The big suspense was who was going to win the Samson Bicycles titanium frame set (a $2000 value) and in the end it was David Gillis walking home with the prize.  Special awards were handed out to Ed Lis (sportsmanship) and Justin Barton (most improved rider).  Congrats to all!

Many thanks again to all of the sponsors and to the Airborne Trail  Crew and special thanks to Phil Pacini for the support and making the event possible.

Mauricio Andino banked a solid 2nd place at Markham

2016 Coconut Cup South Florida Series #6 - Markham Park Trails- Sunrise,  Fl 3-6-16

This one was worth the wait, orginially scheduled for February the rain delayed Markham park round was held under sunny skies and dry trails.  Also the race was an afternoon program due to the fact that when the reschedule was made there was already another event on the books for the morning so the bike race couldn't start until afternoon, which was a first for Gone Riding events.  Things worked out well however as the kids got started at 12 noon and faced a 2.6 mile long fast loop.  At 1pm the yellow wave hit the 6.25 mile long race loop and trail wizard Carlos Galvis had the even the locals wondering where they were as he connected many sections in a very creative fashion.

The elite class was a hammer fest early on but as the laps drew by it came down to two riders battling for the lead, Adam Cohen and Tim Zimmerman but in the end it was Zimmerman with the oveall win.  Simone Berger continued her winning ways as she took the win in the women's expert class.  City Bicycles was the round sponsor (second round in a row) as they handed out thousands in gift certificates to the medalists, many thanks!

Many thanks to all of the sponsors and to the Markham Park Trail Crew for the support and making the event possible.
