Awesome in Amelia!

2016 Coconut Cup South Florida Series #5 - Amelia Earhart Trails- Hialeah,  Fl 2-28-16

What a difference a couple of months can do for race conditions in South Florida, while the end of 2015 was all about wetness, 2016 has so far been great for mountain bike racing.  The temperatures were touching on the seventies by mid day and the Amelia Trail Crew had the trail in the best shape possible for the challenging 7 mile loop that started off with a series of technical sections including the famous "Little Razorback" hills.  On Saturday there was a bonus Individual Time Trial for the series and the Cat 1 racers hit the 3 mile short course at 3pm.  The TT loop although short was certainly not easy as it also included most technical parts of the park and didn't leave much room for rest.

It was Marcos Rodriguez taking the fastest time in the Time Trial with a 14:52 (the only rider to break the 15min mark) and Simone Berger was the top female with a 16:42.  Sunday had the youngsters taking on one the longest kids courses in the series at 3 miles, Angel Rodriguez was the fastest in that event.  The elite racers hit the trails at 9:30am and after four laps it was Tim Zimmerman taking the top male spot while Simone Berger again was the fastest of the females.  City Bicycles was the round sponsor as they handed out thousands in gift certificates to the medalists, many thanks!

Many thanks to all of the sponsors and to the Amelia Trail Crew for the support and making the event possible.

Jeff Lenosky lofts a nice one at the 12 Hours of Santos

2016 12 Hours of Santos - Vortex Trails- Ocala,  Fl 2-20-16.

After months of wet racing weather it finally turned absolutely perfect for this annual race and all around get-together.  Nearly 400 racers hit the 9 mile course literally running at the 10am start, it featured about a quarter mile run followed by a three quarter mile parade lap around the Vortex pit area before finally taking on the single track, all of which certainly spread the field out considerably.  The course layout changes every year and this year it featured several newly built wood features including the pictured "Big Dip" that capped off a thrilling drop with a fun but safe step up jump for the more aggressive riders.  At night the popular feature was lite with Christmas lights for a special "runway" feeling, cool stuff.  Many commented that this was the best layout ever so special thanks go to Ron Henion for the layout and to Ray Petro for wild and wooly wood features.

Many thanks to the OMBA club (Ocala Mountain Bike Association) for trail building and maintenance and of course to all of the great sponsors that made the event another success!  Also thanks to the racers and families that donated over $2000 to club OMBA over the weekend to continue the trail magic here in Ocala.

In the racing action the competition was stiff all across classes and distances and first to claim a win was Mike Mace taking the 3 Hour men's class and also the fastest lap of the day with a 37:30 while Carolyn Maddox topped the women's 3 Hour class.  In the 6 Hour men's class it was a knock down drag out race between Bob McCarty and Alex Muecci win Alex getting the nod in the end.  Beata Wronska took the 6 Hour women's title.  Other six hour winners were Ivar Kozeja (45+) and Layne Michael (amateur men).  "Brick City Bicycles" won the 4 person team sport competition, "Thrill Billies" took the under 140 year base class, "Mad Outfitters" was the best of the over 140 year base class and "Hunter, Dowling, Davis & Anderson" were the Co-Ed champs.  In the 2 person team class it was "Bent Roys" taking the win, Mark Pentengill was the amateur 12 solo winner and the top solo rider of the day was Jimmy Tourel with a strong come from behind win.

Winner of the "Best Pit" competition was Brick City Bicycles, honorable mention goes to SORBA Jacksonville which featured their fire pit jump that only the brave dared.

Can't wait for next year already!

First ever Battle of Snow Hill a hit

2016 Battle of Snow Hill - Snow Hill Trails- Geneva,  Fl 2-7-16

Well the deck seemed to be stacked against the first ever endurance race near Orlando, a crowded race calendar, super bowl Sunday and then there was the weather.  An all day rain on Saturday and a cold and windy Sunday made some parts of the trail a little more challenging than normal but the morning of the race the rain stopped and 99% of the trail was in great shape.  The event started with a running start at 9am under a cold cloudy sky but by the half way point the sun started to come out and all in all it turned out to be another beautiful day in Central Florida.

The newly formed Sorba Orlando club had laid out a nice 9 mile loop that featured fast and flowing single track spiced up with some rooty cypress sections and plenty of passing lanes in between.   The club also provided the racers with the course marshal crew on the course to keep things  running smoothly.

The action heated up fast on the trail as Trent Maddox took control of the overall lead and was never headed as he raced toward the 3 Hour solo win, Trent also claimed the fastest lap of the day with a 39:23 time.  Caroyln Maddox and wife of Trent also won her class (the 3 Hour female solo).  In the six hour solo class Ben Smith held claim to the top postion while Joan Weaver was the female 6 hour solo champ.  The Mad Outfitters team of Robert Duncanson and John Ayers Jr beat a tightly contested field in the Two Person relay class while the Velo Creek Bike & Brew team of Sean Mather and Erin VanWinkle were the Co-Ed winners.

Many thanks to all of the sponsors and to the SORBA Orland Club for the support and making the event possible.

2016 Amelia 369 endurance -Amelia Earhart Trails- Hialeah,  Fl 1-23-16

Despite an all day rain on Friday the sun came out and the trail was magically dry on Saturday morning for the annual endurance race at the popular trail system.  Racers hit the trail in a series of staggered starts with the longer distances (9 hour) going first.  It was Bob McCarty taking control early as he cruised to an easy win in the 9 hour solo men's class while Simone Berger did the same in the women's solo class.  The six hour solo class was won by Allison Anjos while in the three hour class was topped by Daminan Sarrania.  It was close finish in the women's class between Lauren Roswell and Beata Wronska.  The top team was "A team of three".

Many thanks to all of the sponsors and to the Amelia Trail Crew for the support and making the event possible.

El Nino continues at Virginia Key Coconut Cup

2015-2016 Coconut Cup #4 - Virginia Key Park - Miami,  Fl 1-17-16

The El Nino effect has been tough on the series this season and Virginia Key was no exception.  Although the conditions were perfect on Saturday an early morning front blew through South Florida and brought rain and high winds but then just as soon as it came it stopped and the race was on.  Fortunatley the trail system can handle rain much better than most and besides a few puddles the course was in great shape.

The kids race had to be delayed 30 minutes but once the storm passed the racers took off and hit the challenging youth layout which was right around the 2.5 mile mark per lap.  By the first wave the schedule was back on track and the racers faced a wet but fast course which only got better as the day went on.  It was Bala Almeida winning the top male spot and Simone Berger was the top female on the day.  Lot's of down to the wire races in many of the classes like the xc-2 19-29 group which saw a three way sprint to the finish and Carlos Bigas getting the nod.

Many thanks to the great folks at the Virginia Key Bicycle Club for prepping the trails, designing the race loop and assisting with safety during the event!

The Miami Bike shop was the again the round sponsor (they sponsored the CC#3 as well) and they braved the bad weather and brought out thousands in gift certificates, free hotdogs and hamburgers for the fans, many thanks!
