Just another day at the beach for Mike Sauerwine

2018 Coconut Cup South Florida Championship series #4 - Virginia Key Trails - Miami, Fl

The first race back at Virginia Key since hurricane Irma was a pleasent suprise as rumors of the devistation were everywhere but the silver lining was that due to the work of hundreds of volunteers the trails were recovered for the most part and back up and running (or is that riding). The Virginiia Key Mountain Bke Club did an amazing job and put together a 6.2 mile challenging loop for the Coconut Cup racers at fourth round of the series and although the trails were in good shape the weather was another story with temperatures starting in the 40's and eventually warming up to the mid sixties by midday (yes that is very cold for Miami).

The race action was hot however with a very close battle between Bob McCarty and Jordan Swingle for the overall Elite win with McCarty taking it by just a couple of bike lengths at the end. Kelly Lalima was the top female on the day taking the women's cat 2 class win. Many thanks again to the VKMBC and to all of the series sponsors, next CC race is in Deerfield Beach on 1-28-18.

Alafia Classic Red vs Blue

2017 Alafia Classic - FLE #6 - 5-13-17- Alafia River State Park Trails - Lithia, Fl

Although the trails were on the dry side the overall conditions were very good for the annual 6 hour race at Alafia, there were two courses used, a "blue" easy course and a "red" more difficulty course, the former was 6 miles in length and the latter was 7 miles.  Thanks to the Swamp Club and the Friends of Alafia the trails were clear and as fast as they could be considering and looks like they have some new trails coming in the near future.

In the race action it was Julio Gomez and Melinda Mosser taking the 3 hour class wins which ran on the blue course.  Mike Foxwell and Sara Zaki won the 6 hour solo red course classes while Mike Brennan and Ashlee Applewhite were the blue course winners.  J. Da valle was the 45+ winner and Robert Duncanson was the fastest Clydesdale of the day.  In the team competition Spark Fitness / AJ's were the open class winners and LeRoy's bike works won the Co-Ed class.  In the amateur class Team Boris won the red course challenge and "just a little dirty offroad" was the blue course champs.  Many thanks to all of the sponsors and park support.

McCarty & Hidalgo battle continues at Lakeland FSC

2017 Specialized Florida State Championship series #7 - Loyce Harpe Park Trails - Lakeland, Fl

This was a weekend that makes all Florida resisdents proud, here we are in the middle of November and the temps were in the low 70's and sun was shinning bright. Weather aside the trails were in great shape and the competition was heavy in all classes, a long half mile sprint before the first single track and then another half mile run on the road to the finish that gave the riders plenty of chances to execute there race plans on the 6.4 mile course. This year the 2nd finger was added to the loop and it provided an added technical challenge to the course and an opportunity for some to take an unintented dip in the lake as the trail is known for it's narrow lanes right next to the water.

There a number of new winners this week and the most notable was Luis Lopez (Honduran National champion) who took a strong win over series Elite rivals Daniel Hidalgo and Bob McCarty. Daniel did hold on to the leaders jersey and now has a six point lead heading into the final in Ocala. Alaina Casioppo continued her hot streak and took the win (now three in a row) over a competitive women's cat 1 field but we will have to wait for the outcome of the make up race at Hialeah to see who will wear the women's leaders jersey going into the final.

Anthony Swilley drove home with the Protano Law $50 holeshot award in the cat 1 50+ B class and the team championship is a close points race with only two points separating the top two teams, PFN Speedlab 1 has the lead.

Many thanks to Bent's Cycling and fitness for providing the prizes for the event and congratulations to all of the racers.

Tim Zimmerman topped the solo's at Amelia

2017 Amelia 30/60 mile trail fund raiser - Amelia Earheart Park - Hialeah, Fl

The conditions were prime for this annual endurance race at Amelia Earhart park, a rain the night before always seems to make the course better and that it did as the course got faster and faster with each passing wheel on the trail.  The Amelia Trail Crew set up a 6 mile relatively tame course for the endurance racers and worked perfectly with fast lap times in the low twenties there was always a lot of action on the trail and in the pits.

Action on the track left Tim Zimmerman standing on top of the podium for the 60 mile male open class and Beata Wronska was the top female in the 60 mile class and now has a commanding lead in the Florida Endurance series as a result.  The winners of the 3 Hour solo classes were Carolyn Maddox and Samuel Meja, in the two person open class it was Damian Serrania and Jose Luis Garcel, the 2 person co-ed team winners were Adam Cohen and Lauren Roswell.  Many thanks to all of the sponsors for supporting the event and to all of the riders that helped with keep the trails at Amelia moving forward.

Gillermo Rosaly digs deep at VK Coconut Cup

2017 Coconut Cup #4 - 1-15-17 - Virginia Key Trails - Miami, Fl

What a better place to hold a bike race in the middle of January, right off the port of Miami and Key Biscane! The weather, the trails, the atmosphere was simply awesome and thanks to the Virginia Key Bicycle Club for all of their efforts with trail building and support. The round sponsor was the Miami Bike shop.com which meant they handed out several thousand dollars worth of prizes to the medalists as they have every year since we have been there, many thanks!

The 6.5 mile course had a couple new twists and a new section that featured some challenging drops and steep climbs and the fastest lap of the day was 25:25 set by elite winner Daniel Hidalgo in the expert 19-39 class. Simone Berger rose to the top in the women's field despite some new competition.

The Protano Law $50 holeshot went to Bob McCarty in the 40-49 expert class. It looks like the new is off to a great start, next race is at Quiet Waters park in Deerfield Beach.
