Coconut Cup #4 – Virginia Key Park – Miami, Fl
The series took it’s annual holiday break and came back to Virginia Key trails to face a tough weather forecast for the day as a cold front carrying rain and healthy winds were due sometime during the afternoon. The weather folks got it right this time, almost down to the minute and fortunately there was just enough time to get 99 % of the races done with a dry course. The Virginia Key MTB club once again had the trails in super shape and had laid out a challenging 6.9 mile course with some creative twists and turns as usual.
The kids and yellow wave had perfectly dry conditions and it was only the last wave of the day that saw some of the later starting classes experience some of the wet stuff but when it did come down it was heavy and windy, so much so that the white wave awards presentation did not happen, instead the racers were handed their medals inside of the scoring trailer (that is if they dared getting wet on the trip). Bob McCarty took the win in the men’s elite division and Jennifer Moos topped Simone Berger to win the women’s cat 1 class. Next CC race is in West Palm Beach and includes a short track bonus, don’t miss it!
