Florida Gravel Grinder series #3 – Tiger Bay State Forest – Ormond Beach, Fl
Round three of Scarbourgh Bicycle Accident Law Florida State Championship Gravel Grinder series presented by Trek Land o’ Lakes series took place at a newly added venue to the series, the Tiger Bay State Forest. The course featured a variety of surfaces along the 12.8 mile journey from the North trailhead heading Southward then turning around heading back for a total of 25.6 miles per loop. There was some sand to deal with in the middle section but fortunately there was rain on Saturday night that helped pack it in making the trip a bit more pleasurable and definitely faster.
Speaking of faster, the competition has been getting pretty serious so far this year and this day was no exception as Jos Chalmers logged his second win of the series by just a little under 3 seconds and averaged 22.5 mph on the 51.2 mile marathon course. Jeanine Seeger claimed her first win of the series (not counting the TT win she had at the opener) and also averaged an impressive 20.8 mph in the marathon women’s field. Sprint overall winner was Alfonzo Vasquez finishing the 1 lap in 1:10:59 and Lani Raspen survived a hard fought sprint finsih to take the women’s sprint class.
At the halfway point in the series the Fields Auto Group leaders jerseys stayed on the backs of Otaner Ojeda and Jeanine Seeger. Many thanks to all of the riders and sponsors! Next round is Saturday April 4th at Seminole state forest in Eustis, Fl.
